Seasonal cycling of phosphorus in the Southern Bight of the North Sea

چکیده

We have investigated the seasonal cycle of nutrients, chlorophyll a, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC) for 10 stations in the Belgian coastal zone. Special attention was given to phosphorus speciation, i.e. dissolved inorganic and organic phosphorus (DIP and DOP) and particulate inorganic and organic phosphorus (PIP and POP). Spatial and temporal trends of the inorganic nutrients and the organic species are discussed. The Belgian part of the southern North Sea is strongly influenced by the river plumes of the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt resulting in northeast-southwest salinity gradient. Extrapolation of winter nutrient and DOC concentrations versus salinity plots yielded zero-salinity values typical of the river Scheldt. The polyphosphate concentration did not show any temporal trend, whereas both the phosphate and the DOP concentrations exhibited distinct seasonal variations. Silica or phosphorus was the potential limiting nutrient for phytoplankton growth based on elemental ratios.

Phosphorus forms of the surface sediment in the Iranian coast of the Southern Caspian Sea

Sediments from the Southern Caspian Sea, located in Iranian coast were examined on the basis of P-fractionation (five forms of phosphorus) by a sequential extraction scheme. Ninety-six surface sediment samples (for each season with triplicate) were collected from eight sampling transects in 10 and 100 m depths during summer and winter in 2010-2011. The result indicated that the most abundant fo...

Seasonal and regional distribution of phytoplankton in the southern Caspian Sea

Seasonal distribution of species composition, cell abundance and biomass of phytoplankton of the Caspian Sea were investigated in 2005. This survey were fulfilled in 6 transects and 26 stations A total of 260 samples were collected during winter to autumn in the southern part of Caspian Sea. Totally, 163 species of phytoplankton were identified (71 species Bacillariophyta, 31 species Chlorophy...

Seasonal Variations of Seawater Properties in the Southwestern Coastal Waters of the Caspian Sea

Seasonal variations of the seawater properties (e.g. temperature, salinity, density and chlorophyll-a) in western part of the southern coastal waters of the Caspian Sea near the Iranian coast were studied. A portable CTD probe was applied for profiling from sea surface to bottom at 23 stations. Maximum depth of the profiling stations was more than 470 m in the study area. Vertical structure of ...

A Novel Modeling Approach to Quantify the Influence of Nitrogen Inputs on the Oxygen Dynamics of the North Sea

Oxygen (O2) deficiency, i.e., dissolved O2 concentrations below 6mgO2 L −1, is a common feature in the southern North Sea. Its evolution is governed mainly by the presence of seasonal stratification and production of organic matter, which is subsequently degraded under O2 consumption. The latter is strongly influenced by riverine nutrient loads, i.e., nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). As riverin...
